NINJA ASSASSIN IN VIFF

Just saw Ninja Assassin, got to meet the director

I just got back from the Vancouver International Film Festival. Ninja Assassin was obviously not an entry for it but it was there was as a bonus for the final film to be shown before the festival ends. I guess you can consider it as the the premiere of the film.

Anyways, James McTiegue was there to introduce the movie and he said he was lucky to get an R rating for his film from the MPAA and when you watch the movie, it shows.

When I first read about the movie, I thought this is going to be cool. Finally a real ninja movie because the last time I saw a ninja in a movie from a Hollywood production, it was called American Ninja.

So anyways, the plot is quite simple and been done before but it wasn't the plot that really keeps you drawn to the movie. It is literally the ninja kills.

And there are lots of "fatalities" in this movie. It is the bloodiest movie you have ever seen in an action movie. You've seen lots of gore in a hollywood horror film but this will be the first hollywood action movie you've seen lots of gore in. And it tops Reservoir Dogs, Kill Bill and Inglorious Basterds.

The movie is very dark as it should be as ninjas are all about stealth and sneaking around in the dark. If you are looking for a well-lit, properly photographed martial arts movie, this is not for you. This movie is about ninjas and it is THE BEST hollywood produced ninja movie ever. The plot is simple enough for you to enjoy. The characters are perfect. Rain is awesome as Raizo, the lead character and his training really shows.

And let me tell you, James McTiegue made the movie that alot of us, when we were growing up in the 80s, wanted to make and that is a ninja movie. Remember during the 80s, we loved characters like Snake Eyes and Stormshadow. In fact, we wanted to be Ninjas, folding ninja stars out of paper in between classes and even in class.

So in this movie, it really shows almost every aspect there is about the ninja from sneaking around in the shadow, to the martial arts, to the various weapons and the philosophy of the ninja. It is all talked about. Maybe alot of you might also think that there will be thin characters and all that but Raizo's story is explored quite thoroughly which makes us actually care for his character.

There were lots of cheers, claps and laughs in the audience but the main thing that excited us the most were the ninja kills. Oh man, James McTiegue treated us to the most satisfying deaths since Lucy Liu got her brain chopped off in Kill Bill.

Anyways, November is not that far away, be sure to check it out
